I can’t even get past the user interface at Discord. Rarely have I felt so uninvited to participate, even as the site aggressively invites me to participate.
And worse, 12-Foot Ladder intentionally doesn’t work on many newspaper sites. Maybe they got some cease-and-desist letters, but for bypassing paper paywalls it’s often useless.
Don’t kink-shame.
“Give them a shot first” is easy to say, but it’s hours or days of moderators and admins’ lives.
Your desire to “connect with pretty much everyone unless they were particularly problematic” is admirable,. Just remember, please, that the wider the gates are opened, the more idiots wander in and the more work for mods and admins.
After dealing with the first thousand or so idiots, you can smell 'em coming. I’m with the admins on this.

Sweet jeebers, I hope this is comedy. I laughed, but 99+% of the bots roaming Reddit are nothing but a drag, and I hope there’s a way to block all bots here.
The ordinary rules don’t apply to corporations, and we’re suckers if we play by ordinary rules.
That’s why ‘shoplifting’ from Kroger, ‘robbing’ a Bank of America branch, ‘stealing’ cable TV from Xfinity, or ‘pirating’ movies or music from Columbia or Universal is not morally wrong. Quite the opposite, it’s the right thing to do.
