If you do drop, just know that it’s often a lot harder to get the motivation to go back if you need to.

In ten years, if you are 35 or so, no matter where you are in life it’ll be harder to go back.

I’m not saying the answer here is to stay in school if you are burned out. But just realize that it will be harder to get that motivation later on in life.

I will say the PWA scene for the fediverse has been pretty good, and until some dedicated apps showed up, I was just using those on my phone and iPad.

I also have a tab group on my ipad that has all my fediverse sites open in it, and that’s a pretty good way to check everything.

In the US I feel like it’s just as much of an issue of access as it is, perhaps, a stigma that you “aren’t a man” if you go to therapy.

Therapy is expensive, and health care doesn’t always cover it.

I definitely get the concern, but I just don’t think it’s going to be as dire as some are predicting.

For me, I’ve built up an OK following on Masto with people I already like to talk to. So if Threads comes along, federates, and then pulls the plug later on, I’ll just be back to where I am now. Even if Meta adds to ActivityPub that doesn’t necessarily mean things that currently work are removed so apps should still be able to function as they do now. At least to my understanding.

And I’m no Meta apologist. I deleted Facebook at least five or six years ago because it increasingly felt terrible to use. And I’ve never had an Instagram account. But, personally, I’m OK to wait and see how this plays out instead of writing it off entirely from the start.

I’m going to trust Eugen’s take on the subject far more than some doom and gloom post. At least for now.

I’m eager to see when it opens up for federation.

There’s been a lot of hand wringing on Mastodon about it, but I feel like if I can follow a friend who uses Threads from my Mastodon account then great. I don’t have to use their app AND I can follow/interact with my friends.

In the privacy section of the App Store it shows Threads basically collecting all data on your phone. So I guess standard Meta practice.

Yeah. Like two or three weeks ago if they said third party apps need to create a couple dollar per month subscription, then I probably would have bit. Now, with the current leadership? Nope.

I agree, actually. The people upset about the 3rd party apps unfortunately don’t represent the majority of the users of Reddit. I have several friends on a friends discord I run that never used a 3rd party app at all. They just used the base reddit client like insane people; but they did/do it. For them nothing is changing, and that’s going to be most of the people.

Unless…all the blackouts some how affect enough of them. If their favorite subreddits die out, then maybe they’ll notice. But overall, I feel like it’ll either take a while for Reddit to die out. Or it’ll just continue chugging on, except a lot of the people putting in the work to moderate and post content will maybe have moved on (which may end up eroding the platform there, too).

But we’ll see for sure.

Been a wild six months losing Tweetbot, moving to Ivory, and now Reddit has decided to trip over itself. I’m eager to see how this site (and the general federated versions of the reddit idea) end up.
