I’d never heard of STIR/SHAKEN…but after looking into it, supposedly T-Mobile was one of the first mobile carriers to implement it…and I’m on T-Mobile…but for the past several years, I keep getting unwanted spam calls to my cell phone that appears to be originating from very regional local numbers (area codes and number prefixes that are local to my area)…because of that I just assumed that they had to be spoofed since the calls are always an unwanted telemarketing robo call and never involve an actual business that is local to me.

So I don’t know how they are still doing it, but somehow telemarketers are causing calls to route through exchanges that are completely local to me.

I think it’s too late for this to be useful. Number spoofing is ultra-common these days and most of the unwanted calls I receive are from spoofed numbers that appear to come from local areas.

If we start blocking the spoofed numbers then eventually we’ll just be blocking every possible combination of digits that can exist.

What we really need first is better detection and blocking of calls using spoofed numbers.

If answering the email requires writing a book to anticipate all the possible questions or options or complications that might come up, then no it’s not disrespectful to call someone instead.

I have always thought of it as how graffiti taggers work. They are always tagging over each other’s work. The last one to paint gets the most exposure but you can still see remnants of more recent taggers the lay under the topmost. Eventually the oldest stuff just gets covered completely. They don’t necessarily pick their canvas because there is other work they try to cover up, they pick their canvas for the location and exposure.

Are you just talking about dynamic DNS services for one or a few home servers?

There’s always DynDNS, but that’s a paid service. I actually discovered that dynamic IP address service was provided free by Google when using Google Domains as the registrar, so I moved a few of my private domains over to Google several years ago to save myself $55 a year.

Unfortunately, Google Domains is shutting down and all registrar services and existing customer domains are getting moved to squarespace and I’ve not yet been able to determine if squarespace is going to be offering the free dynamic DNS service or not.

“The Thing” (1982)

I first saw this movie at the age of 13, in a very dark and creepy unfinished basement. It was terrifying.

Even after all these years, this movie still holds up very well to modern standards and stands out as one of the best sci-fi horror movies of all time. I just watched it again in October (my designated horror movie month) and it still never fails to make me uncomfortable and on edge while watching.

My standard breakfast (for years) is: 1 hard boiled egg, a large spoonful of cottage cheese, and some fruit (usually a small banana or a mandarin orange). Assuming you hard boiled the eggs in advance, the prep time is however long it takes you to peel an egg.

I’m not aware of anything proven other than diet & exercise. There are a few trending weight-loss drugs hitting the market right now, but from what I’ve seen they are expensive and come with their own side effects…so for me, it’s just doing it the proven old-fashioned way: diet & exercise.

Visceral fat builds up slowly over time (years) and the changes can be very subtle and unnoticeable until one day you just notice it.

For Kwashiorkor - I really don’t know. It’s just something I’d heard of before, so I found a link to a description and dropped the reference. There are probably lots of other things it could be that I just haven’t heard about.

I, personally, am affected by visceral fat and have been taking steps to lose it and that process is also very slow going, so I currently look like an average guy, but with a pronounced belly. It makes me look like shit in a t-shirt and has caused me to suffer from high blood pressure.

I assume you mean “CO” detector. CO2 is Carbon Dioxide and I don’t think you went out and purchased and installed a detector for that.

I’ll also point out that not all CO detectors are created equal. There was a lot of news about this earlier this year where a number of CO detectors sold on Amazon simply did not work, or did not meet published safety and detection standards. If you haven’t done so already, find your make/model and verify that it’s not one of the sub-standard units that were pawned on Amazon for years.

CO detectors also need to be replaced (they don’t last forever). Most use chemistry to detect CO levels, and that chemistry begins degrading as soon as the unit is built. Some last just a couple years, some are designed to last up to 10 years, but the point is - they all go bad eventually. How old is your detector?

Smoke detectors can also be fooled by high moisture.

I usually don’t buy smoke/CO combo units (I prefer separate detectors for each thing), but I do have a combo unit in a hallway in my upstairs - and it’s got a great feature where it announces by voice what is triggering the alarm (“smoke” or “carbon monoxide”). Does yours do that or does it just sound the same alarm regardless of what was detected?

If our eyes had the concept of shutter speed, then there would be shutter speed amount of delay before our brains could process the collected image (keeping the analogy of how a camera works). The penalty of a delay before the brain can process the image would be way worse than what we currently experience, which is degraded night vision.

Perceiving and reacting to motion quickly is way more advantageous than perceiving a high quality image (for survival).

I’ve always heard that Alberta is the ‘Texas of Canada’ (presumably for the oil & being politically conservative). But since Canada only has 10 provinces, I guess that would mean each province needs to represent 5 different US states.

I can understand part of the motivation for doing this, but does this not immediately make it significantly harder for users to evaluate an instance and make decisions about whether or not to join an instance based on what other instances it allows/blocks?

If I’m understanding this change correctly, it would hinder user’s ability to find an instance that’s well-aligned to them because no one (including potential new users) will be able to see one of the most important metrics governing how an instance chooses to operate (what it federates and defederates with).

On April Fools Day 2006, I woke up to what I later found out was a spontaneously collapsed lung.

Anyone who’s experienced a collapsed lung can assure you the treatment is brutal. They basically cut open your chest between two of your ribs (on the affected side), insert a tube and sew it in place, then apply a light vacuum on that tube to suck out the air and fluid between your chest cavity and lung, causing your lung to re-inflate. You also go through a powerful round of antibiotics and are put on oxygen to make up for your 50% reduced lung function. The suction process takes about a week, and the pain is excruciating and immune to powerful pain killers.

I would have died from this without the emergency surgery and treatment, and if it had been just 60 years earlier, a collapsed lung would have been a death sentence.

I still celebrate Christmas - though in more of a yule way than anything resembling christianity. What I think of as the spirit of christmas is…friends/family getting together in winter and sharing what they have.

And, of course, my circumcision…still got that.
