This is really what’s is beginning to bother me. I came from Reddit with the fuck-spez-wave searching for an alternative, and Lemmy somehow sounded interesting and a new way of doing things.

I can live with the lag of content, that will come, but more and more it looks like every server is their own little community with whatever weirdnesses they have, and each one has a bunch of moderators, most good, some bad, but all doing what they think is best.

When you’re just a mainstream user looking for content and debate, and take no interest in server drama, defederations and whatever, it’s all just unwanted noise and irritating.

Living in a part of the world where we don’t really tip I have to ask, is tipping your landlord really a thing?

This is only counting confirmed dead games. There are still loads of game companies and shot loads of stupid peoples money to be drained.

I used to work in IT forensics - there’s nothing that will ever be worse than the things I saw there. People are freaking scary.

But outside work I’ve seen my part of shit, puke and other strange fetish videos, and people being blown up or driven down - being on the internet in the early days sort of made you numb to those things.

I will say that I saw a paper cut fetish video once. That shit hurt through the monitor.

Not that I think it’s a good idea, but to be fair, you’re only noticing the bad and extreme cases. There are subtle and fine cases too that just don’t draws attention to them.

I may be part of the ‘cult’ - I watch it once or twice a year when it’s shown in the local cinema.

But I won’t defend the movie - it’s really bad in every possible way, and the background story of how it was made is at some points also sketchy.

But sitting with friends and others who knows the movie, and have a fun time yelling quotes is just that, fun. Nothing more, nothing less.

From time to time I bring people who don’t know the movie, and I make sure to inform them, that they should expect the worst movie ever, but perhaps the most fun they’ve had going to a movie.

Mid 1940s it would’ve been a great laugh.

Thanks for the feedback - I’ve installed Pop OS tonight and installed bnet, wow, unreal engine, rocket league and steam.

Battle.net had a few problems because of the host file, and Vulkan apparently needed some fiddling - but at apart from that, I must say everything runs smoothly.

I look forward to test a lot of things deeper - but for now it very much seems like an experience I could get used to.

You’re right - but I’d say things on newer windows versions are pretty much out of the box. It may ask for driver installs, but that’s often just pressing a confirmation box.

It’s not that I’m afraid of the technical stuff - I am a windows sys admin and software developer. I just have bad memories of hours of getting drivers to work on Linux. I’m sure, that if I make the change and are happy, eventually I’ll take a deeper dive. But it takes a good first time impression to get there.

Thanks for the answer - I’ve usually just gone with Ubuntu. Would that still be the recommended distro for gaming?

Apart from wow and flight sim, I play rocket league, satisfactory, old school monkey island (and other point and click games) and FIFA from time to time and I make small game projects in unreal engine.

I really want to switch to Linux, but I’ve been told this before and then ended up spending hours trying to get everything to work, and usually give up … but it’s been a couple of years since I tried the last time, so is this the right time?

I have zero interest in the technical parts of Linux or setting things up. I want things to work out if the box. I may have to dual boot because of WoW and MS Flight Sim, but if everything else works it may be worth it.
