Well I think I pay something like $95 for YouTube TV +Max. Netflix is like 12? I’m on a sweet Spotify+Hulu for 9.99 promo for years, but I think it’s going up to $10.99. Disney is like $9. It may seem like a lot, but that’s all I spend on entertainment. I don’t eat outside the home regularly. I don’t go see movies at theaters. I don’t buy things like DVDs and stuff.

And to be fair, it’s for the household. We’re poly so there’s a variety of interests. And if you divide that by 5 adults, it’s cheap.

I cancelled cable a few years ago and now use YouTube TV. I love it because I can record everything, never run out of DVR space. I can run 5 tvs with different shows on each. I can watch TV anywhere on my phone and laptop. I can stop on one device and pick back up on another. Well over 100 channels now (but I only really watch a handful). Every channel also has an on-demand section. Like TCM has what’s live but also a huge library to stream from.

I have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Peacock, Max…but if I had to just use one service, it would be YouTube TV. It follows me, and is not tied to my house. If I go visit another state, it will even switch to the local news wherever I am. It has, by far, the most content in one spot for one price.

Not everyone watches US politics, or Fox News. I live in the US and don’t know her. I am sure there are famous faces you don’t know because it’s not your field of interest. Can you identify famous contemporary painters by face? Physicists? Composers? Game designers? Belittling someone’s education because they don’t know something you do is pathetic and says a lot more about you than it does the person you were mocking.

Collections add a little something real to an interest. You are into baseball? Collect baseball cards and baseball memorabilia. Some find a tactile connection improves their enjoyment. For some people, it may be old video games, for others it may be coins, stamps, achievements in video games. Yes they are digital, but you can see them in your achievement/trophy list. I think some people are drawn to collections more than others because they favor a certain learning style over another. I’m not educated in behavior in any way so I am qualified to share my opinion on the Internet. There’s nothing abnormal about that. The collecting part. Not the part where I have no real knowledge on a topic but I feel my opinion is worthy of being heard. That’s actually normal, too, probably. But it shouldn’t be.

For me, sugars and processed foods (grains especially) were an addiction. I see a lot of advice about allowing yourself a “cheat” day now and then but I would advise against it. It’s like telling a drug addict it’s ok to shoot up now and then, or it’s ok for the alcoholic to have a drink on special occasions. Processed foods are harmful to us over time. So while it won’t kill you when you are 20 or even 30, it will catch up with you.

Push through those cravings. They will go away.

I feel like they all see the inevitability that AI will drastically change the money model very soon. And it will not be to their profit, so best make every penny they can right now is their mentality.

In time, things settle. Those that defederate too much will soon become self-isolated and that’s totally fine. Most of the servers will remain federated and will be the body that everyone wants to connect with and others may be very happy to self-isolate and not caring about any other servers or their communities.

What I do find possible is that the owners of federated servers will start to form a governing “council” that share some agreed principles for content and the allied servers would all defederate from any server that violates their shared content rules. To join the main group, you have to agree to abide by the council rules or be defederated as well (for example a server asks to join the main group, then also feds with a piracy server on the group ban list, so it gets defederated by the group).

I feel like NSFW stuff will be fine here, but the questionable, non-consensual stuff will not even be visible by the main group. The federated servers will be the content core, the unfederated servers will be like the wild west, full of questionable and potentially dangerous stuff.

Just give it some time, this is sudden and unexpected growth. It’s healthy. I think people are starting to see just how corporate social media is, and how much they are both the content generators as well as the content consumers. So steps to take back the control of how we communicate is a win for us.

I feel like the fediverse is similar to email servers. No one company controls email. Each email provider can set up their own rules, etc.

When I was displeased with reddit, I deleted all my comments, deleted my account and started getting my social fix from here as wellas in the WordPress blogosphere.

I honestly don’t care what happens at reddit. I’m certainly not gonna get mad when others keep using the site. One of the things I see a lot in today’s culture is the demand for me to be upset with this company or that company.

Every successful business out there got that way by exploiting someone, usually labor. I can’t exile myself from society. So I try to depend on corps as little as possible, but it’s impossible to boycott every company.

I get your frustration, something you love has changed. You feel personally damaged. But let it go. You don’t need reddit. Accept that also means you don’t need reddit to fail. Until you do, you’re just going to stress more and more as you see people doing whatever it is they want to do instead of what you want them to do.

I feel like ad revenue is not their top monetization priority personally. It’s speculation of course. But I think they are learning that the free content the users create will generate much more revenue from mega corps who want access to all of it to train emerging AIs. Data, specifically YOUR data is valuable. What posts do you look at? What do you upvote? What do you downvote? What subreddits do you subscribe to? There is a wealth of information they will monetize. This is why I think they don’t care that the little app devs can’t afford their new API pricing. They can’t give the app devs one price then think Microsoft, Google, Apple and other multi-billion dollar corps would pay a higher price.

Again, this is just my speculation. But the suddenness and the exorbitant price means they want to act now, and capitalize on this new market while it’s good. Their terms of service specifically say everything you post, you give them a license to use, sell, or sub-license without dispute, forever. This isn’t about ads.

I feel this won’t happen. If big subs continue to be dark too long, the reddit admins would simply remove the hostile volunteer mods and reopen the subs. The mods are used to being gods of their little domains. If they cross the line, they will be reminded that they own nothing. They can obey reddit or they can be replaced.

That is what I see in the future for any mods that try to hold subs hostage indefinitely.

I made two communities and I’m the only member for now. Trust me, though. If you’re interested, others are interested. There are basic steps you can take though if you want to grow a community.

First. Know where to find other people with your interests. Facebook groups, discord servers, WordPress blogs are all good general places.

Second. Maybe make a blog. WordPress has a large community. Make posts, use tags that might show up in keyword searches. Make sure your blog has links to your Lemmy community. You can have that blog auto post on other social media like Mastodon or Facebook.

The point is this: if your community has no members for a while, it’s just likely that nobody knows about it. Lemmy is still tiny. You will have to fish from bigger ponds for a while.

I have set up two communities that are core to my personal interests (probably not mainstream) but hopefully others will find their way here from reddit to add to them. I am excited about getting away from that, to a more decentralized format. I joined Mastadon shortly after Twitter imploded and now I’m here because of reddit.

That’s really difficult to do with a karma-like system. People posting in echo-chambers can post misinformation but receive many up votes.

Credibility is subjective. For example, people on one side of a political ideology will not think people on the opposite side are credible. So who can really determine an “attribute of credibility”?

We would have to agree on a standard first and that’s just not going to happen.

Former redditor. What do I call myself now? Lemming? lol But I also noticed that I don’t see some Karma score equivalent, which is a great thing to leave behind. Those imaginary points were just useless at best, and used against people who were new at the worst.
